Where did Black Friday start?

Originally Black Friday was associated with a financial crisis, two Wall Street financers named Jim Fisk and Jay Gould were responsible for this as they bought a ton of gold in the hope they would be able to sell it at a huge profit. Unfortunately for the unlucky pair the US gold market crashed which left Wall Street bankrupt.

What is the history behind Black Friday?

Back when US Shops did their accounting by hand, profits were noted in black and loses in red. During most of the year many shops were ‘in the red’ and ‘went into the black’ the day after Thanksgiving, this was due to shoppers spending lots on discounted stock.

How Did Black Friday Get the name?

In the 1950s it was Police officers in Philadelphia that first linked the term Black Friday to the post-Thanksgiving period. The day after Thanksgiving saw a huge number of shoppers and tourists flock to the city to watch the Army-Navy football game, this created a huge amount of criminal activity including traffic jams and shop lifting. Due to the chaos no police officer in the city was allowed a day off, they had to work long hard shifts so there came the term ‘Black Friday’ was born to refer to this time. In print Black Friday first become known in 1699 after an advertisement was published in the American Philatelist magazine. Towards the end of the 1980s Black Friday soon became commonly used by everyone and quickly started linking it to the post-Thanksgiving sales.
